“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” – II Timothy 2:15
This is a pretty clear directive from the Lord that tells us to prepare for the work He has for us. Now that may sound like a huge challenge but the truth of the matter is that when you study God’s Word there is a hunger that grows in you for more. This hunger is something that a believer can not afford to be without because it is the catalyst that helps you go deeper in the things of God. So then the challenge becomes a blessing as you follow God’s instruction to study.
One of the definitions for the word workman in this verse is “teacher”. You may not consider yourself a teacher but think of this. A teacher is one who doesn’t just use words but uses actions as well. You teach those around you every day with what you say and the lifestyle you lead. You may or may not even be aware of this fact. It isn’t necessary to be behind a podium or up in front of a group of people to teach. As a believer God calls us “living epistles” because as we are examples to all around us. Why? Because we are to imitate Christ and by doing that we let them see Jesus. They learn of Him from us.
Now let’s look at the phrase “rightly dividing”. Some of the meanings for this phrase are to proceed on straight paths, hold a straight course and to teach the Truth directly and correctly. There are many who will take a scripture out of context and build an entire teaching on the one scripture. This is not rightly dividing the Word. We need to study in a way that we allow the Word to confirm itself. This is rightly dividing the Word.
I’ve said all that to say, “Be Prepared”. Be prepared to be a blessing to others and to walk out God’s plan for your life. How? Do all you can to learn and develop in the Word of God in order to be a workman who relies on the Word and is never ashamed because you have taken the time to prepare. Preparation time is never wasted time.
